The Customer Column: 72 Hours TSMC Posted a Blowout and the Market Rewrote the Name on the 2027 Invoice
A +44% revenue guide and +68.7% net income collapsed into a -1.45% share price — three reratings fired at once
The Blowout That Wasn't Answered
On October 16, 2026, TSMC (2330) printed the most aggressive quarterly numbers in its history. Q3 net income rose 68.7% YoY to NT$763B (~US$23.6B), and FY26 USD revenue growth guidance was lifted for the third time this year to ~44%. On the earnings call, CEO CC Wei (魏哲家) used a tone multiple analysts described as unprecedentedly assertive, and the most aggressive foreign brokerage pinned a NT$4,410 price target on the stock.
The stock fell. TSMC-TW closed -1.45% on the call day; the US ADR traded -4.5% after hours; the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index gave back -7%. On October 22, the TAIEX swung 1,291 points intraday before closing down 846 (46,041), with foreigners net-selling NT$81.7B in a single session. The next day, the same "TSMC pulled back post-earnings" headline kept reappearing.
Over the following 48–72 hours, the foreign press, local sell-side, and macro desks converged on three questions. None of them were about how much TSMC had earned. All three were about who pays that bill in 2027.
Rerating 1 — AMD Walked Back In Under Lisa Su's Name
The sharpest shift surrounded TSMC's NT$8 trillion (≈US$250B+) 2027 revenue target. On the same day, technews, bnext, and udn all ran the same sentence: the key to NT$8T lies as much with AMD as with Nvidia. Whether Lisa Su's MI400 roadmap actually breaks into hyperscaler mix in 2027 determines TSMC's second CoWoS demand axis.
That is a subtle but decisive rerating. Until this week, the market effectively priced TSMC as an NVIDIA supplier. In 72 hours, analysts began discounting NVIDIA single-exposure and explicitly inserted Lisa Su's execution risk into TSMC's customer column. The top customer didn't change; the top customer's weight became, for the first time, a question.
Rerating 2 — Musk Alone Wasn't the Threat; Intel + Musk Is
Seaport Research's Jay Goldberg changed the angle in an October 23 note. The real risk to TSMC isn't Elon Musk's Terafab idea on its own — it's Intel actively co-building it. Intel's manufacturing depth combined with Musk's capital and captive demand is the first setup that genuinely challenges the "no alternative foundry exists" premise. In the same 72-hour window, CC Wei confirmed TSMC is in active discussions on a second US fab in Texas, and Reuters reported TSMC is surveying suppliers to switch factory-automation motors to rare-earth-free designs to hedge Chinese supply risk.
In the very week TSMC posted its blowout, three vectors were simultaneously priced into the stock: (1) multiplication of US production geography, (2) decoupling from Chinese supply chains, (3) a reassessment of the competitive landscape. The quarter itself was clean. The 2027 geography of fixed assets and the 2027 competitive density are no longer clean.
Rerating 3 — Memory Got Promoted to Swing Variable
The third question was memory. At Berlin GTC, Jensen Huang declared memory oversupply unlikely before 2029; SK Hynix announced an iHBM (HBM5) roadmap with integrated cooling that cuts thermal resistance 30%; and Micron, on the same day, formally skipped 4F² DRAM cell architecture, calling the density advantage "near-mythological." DDR5 16Gb spot sits at $61.267 as of October 24. Analysts raised, for the first time in Q&A, the possibility that HBM supply — not TSMC CoWoS capacity — becomes the binding constraint on 2027 revenue realization.
Layered on top: the Micron Taichung union secured an average 2.7x salary increase (production line NT$33,000→NT$89,000), and Taiwan's Ministry of Labor is pressing the Taoyuan plant to match. The memory price axis and the memory cost floor axis both just got repriced in the 2027 model.
Why a Clean Quarter Wasn't Enough
The three reratings share one structure. Through the 2024–2026 cycle, the market modeled TSMC revenue as a single variable — NVIDIA Hopper/Blackwell/Rubin. In 72 hours that single variable fractured into three: NVIDIA customer mix, probability of alternative foundries, and the first derivative of memory supply. The fact that each variable can act in either direction on 2027 numbers alone demands a multiple discount.
The TAIEX tape confirmed it. September export orders topped a record $114B and the manufacturing output index hit 143.31 for a 31st straight month of growth, yet foreigners concentrated selling in 16 Taiwan tech names — TSMC, UMC, Nanya, Winbond — compressing semi sector P/E back to the July crash lows. The good number wasn't rejected; the persistence of the good number into next year was.
PSMC (6770) guiding +10–20% mature-node price hikes for 2027, Foxconn (2317) injecting $1.20B simultaneously into Singapore, France, and Czech subsidiaries, and Taiwan's NDC doubling its overseas semiconductor investment facility from NT$30B to NT$60B — all three landed on the same table within the same 72 hours. The industry is still growing. The geography and the customer column of that growth are being rewritten in real time.
Positioning
The trade that bets on TSMC's FY26 numbers is finished. After October 20–23, the TSMC multiple is being repriced as a call option on "does AMD become a meaningful second demand lane in 2027." With the foreign selloff pulling sector P/E back to July's trough, the governing question is not timing an entry; it is the tone CC Wei's language gets echoed in by Lisa Su on AMD's first-half 2027 call. When that tone converges with TSMC's October tone, the discount of the last 72 hours unwinds.
