Below the Die: Wiwynn's Record Quarter and the 72 Hours Taiwan's Materials Chain Got Pre-Booked Through 2029

Wiwynn's +56% QoQ and the pull-through to Chun Yi's NT$6B backlog, Iteq's 2029 roadmap, Canon's +50% litho, and 3M's $150M optics stake

Upstream pre-book horizons (through 2029)M9 AI server PCB vs legacy — the physics forcing the capex

The sub-die layer sold out first

On Oct 20, Wiwynn (6669-TW) printed September revenue of NT$172.6B (near 2x YoY, +56% QoQ) — both a monthly and quarterly record — and disclosed that Vera Rubin NVL72 trial production is already running. The market reacted to the ODM's quarterly number, as expected. The signal this report cares about is three to four tiers upstream: how Wiwynn's demand print just locked in 2029 capex for Taiwan's materials, substrate and tooling vendors.

72 hours, four upstream declarations

Between Oct 19 and Oct 21, Taiwan's upstream chain issued unusually long and specific guidance. Four stand out:

  • Chun Yi (6664-TW): IC-substrate equipment and PCB tooling supplier disclosed an NT$6B (~US$188M) backlog and set a January 2027 factory groundbreaking. Visibility now extends "well into 2027."
  • Iteq (6213-TW): Formalized a CCL monthly capacity roadmap of 5.7M sheets by end-2026 → 9.15M by 2029. Four years of CCL capex sized to M9 AI server board volume.
  • Canon: Expanding back-end lithography equipment capacity +50% by 2029 vs 2026, explicitly on HBM demand.
  • Taiwan Glass (1802-TW): Holds 40% share in Low DK high-end fiberglass cloth with Nvidia certification; supply tight through 2027. September revenue +34.1% YoY.

Layered onto this, Walsin Technology (2492-TW) hit limit-up at NT$405.5 on Oct 21 and raised full-year capex to ~NT$4B; Apex Tooling (8021-TW) launched an NT$2.1B capital raise at TPCA Show 2026; Chih Sheng (2467-TW) printed Q3 net profit +162% YoY and is positioning its G2C+ alliance for the AI substrate cycle. Across the materials chain, the reference year in guidance shifted from "next year" to 2029 in a single 72-hour window.

M9 boards' physics is forcing the capex

The pre-book becomes legible once you look at the physical limits of modern AI server PCBs. Apex Tooling disclosed that M9-class high-layer boards — now 6–8 mm thick and up to 1,700 mm long — have halved drill-bit life. Unimicron (3037) showed 60-layer HDI samples at TPCA; today's production boards are 30–40 layers. That is a 1.5–2x layer-count jump in one generation. More layers means (a) CCL demand scales with layer count, (b) Low DK fiberglass sheet count and spec requirements rise together, (c) via drilling cycles multiply and bit consumption accelerates, (d) back-end lithography steps increase. The four upstream vendors' 2029 capex plans are reading the same spec sheet.

Wiwynn's quarterly print is a receipt, not a signal

Wiwynn's +56% QoQ is consistent with Goldman Sachs raising global server TAM by +31% for 2027 and +45% for 2028. FactSet lowered Wiwynn's 2026 EPS consensus marginally to NT$121.6 (–1%) but kept the target at NT$2,739 — the market is now pricing upstream visibility, not Wiwynn's quarterly delta. On the same day, 3M took a US$150M, 4.68% stake in Young Optics (3406-TW) to co-develop EBO optics for AI data centers — another pre-book, this time three tiers below the ODM.

Risk — but not to the cycle itself

The downside is unambiguous. CoreWeave 2031–2032 unsecured bonds broke below $0.80, implied default above 60%; the SOX fell nine sessions in a row; foreign investors net-sold TSMC for eight consecutive days. US 10-year yields above 5% are compressing AI growth multiples and raising data-center borrowing costs simultaneously. Micron Taiwan's second mediation on Oct 22 could layer memory supply noise on top. But each of these is a demand-level adjustment; none of them reverses the 2029 capex commitments the upstream chain has now put in writing. TSMC's Q3 EPS of NT$29.43 and third upward 2026 USD growth revision to ~44%, plus Taiwan's September export orders of US$114.2B (+62.4% YoY, 19th consecutive monthly gain), continue to justify the upstream build.

Positioning — buy the layer under the die

The trade implied by these 72 hours is simple. Wiwynn's (6669) quarter is a receipt, not the next signal. The signal is Chun Yi, Iteq, Taiwan Glass, Apex, Chih Sheng and Walsin Tech putting 2027–2029 guidance on paper. With DDR5 16Gb spot at $60.767 (Oct 21) and Nomura/Dell maintaining memory shortage views into 2028, HBM/DDR demand also underwrites upstream materials. A barbell — hedging downstream names like Hon Hai (2317) and Wiwynn (6669) against the visibility now embedded in the materials/tooling layer — is the trade this week structured.
