The $0.80 vs 2027 Trade: The Morning Credit Priced AI Default and Taiwan's Backlog Pre-Sold 2027

CoreWeave 2031 bonds break $0.80, foreign funds pull NT$586B in a week — yet Taiwan Glass, 光頡, Lite-On and Chih Sheng are sold through 2027

The Backlog Side — Taiwan AI Chain Operational GrowthThe Credit Side — Foreign Capital Flight from Taiwan

Two Prices, One Morning

Before the Asia open on 2026-10-20, CoreWeave's 2031 and 2032 maturity unsecured bonds broke below $0.80 of par — pushing the implied default probability above 60% (Taiwan Funds Quietly Accumulate PCB Chain as CoreWeave Debt Alarm Rattles Semis, cnyes, 2026-10-20). The same morning, on the floor of the TPCA Show 2026 in Taipei, Apex Tooling (8021-TW) filed a NT$2.1B capital raise against record-high AI-server PCB precision drilling orders (Apex Tooling Posts Record Revenue, cnyes).

One side was pricing a 2031 default. The other was pricing out 2027 bookings. Over 72 hours the gap between those two prices only widened.

The Credit Side: Foreigners Sold TSMC Eight Sessions in a Row

Start with the numbers. Last week foreign investors net sold NT$586.2B (~$18B) from Taiwan equities — NT$241.5B pulled from TSMC alone and NT$75.1B from MediaTek (Taiwan AI Supply-Chain Stocks Battered by NT$586B Foreign Outflow, cnyes, 2026-10-18). The 10/16 session alone registered a record single-day outflow of NT$302.6B (~$9.3B). On Monday 10/20, foreigners sold another NT$76.7B — the ninth consecutive session of outflows and the eighth straight day selling TSMC (Foreign Funds Extend Taiwan Sell-Off to 9 Days, cnyes). The NT dollar depreciated 1.37% in five sessions to touch 32.35, prompting the CBC to intervene.

The analytical frame was supplied by Goldman Sachs strategist Louis Miller: AI hyperscaler credit spreads (GSUCHS30) hit year-highs while equities lagged — the same divergence seen in 2000 — and he recommended shorting Taiwan semis against it (Goldman Sachs Warns AI Stocks Face 15% Downside, cnyes). With the U.S. 10-year above 5%, AI growth-stock multiples are compressing at the same moment data-center financing costs are rising.

The Backlog Side: 2027 Is Already Sold

Over the same 72 hours, operational data pointed the opposite direction.

TSMC reported Q3 EPS of NT$29.43, +68.7% YoY, guided Q4 USD revenue to $52.3B–$54.3B, and raised full-year 2026 growth to ~44% (TSMC Q3 EPS +68.7% YoY, technews, 2026-10-19). An unnamed foreign broker set a street-high TSMC target of NT$5,000 — more than 2x spot — framing a revenue-and-profit doubling scenario (Foreign Broker Sets Street-High TSMC Target at NT$5,000, technews).

Go down the chain and the pattern sharpens:

  • Taiwan Glass (1802): NVIDIA-certified, holds 40% share in Low DK AI-grade fiberglass cloth, supply tight through 2027. September revenue +34.1% YoY, +8.1% MoM.
  • Guang Jie (3624) precision resistors: 20–35% price hikes + Q3 revenue +58.4% YoY, with lead times pre-booked into H2 2027.
  • Lite-On (2301): Q3 revenue NT$57.4B (+28% YoY), a 39-quarter high, with 800VDC PSU volume pulled forward to Q1 2027.
  • Chih Sheng (2467): Q3 net profit +162% YoY, positioning through the G2C+ alliance for the AI substrate cycle.
  • Shih Shor (4566): Four consecutive record-revenue months (Jun–Sep) on a NT$2B AI cooling ramp.
  • MiTAC Computing: NT$12.62B (~$400M) second-round AI server plant investment under Taiwan's 'Welcome Home' reshoring scheme.
  • 3M → Young Optics (3406): $150M private placement for a 4.68% stake, to co-develop AI data-center EBO optics.

Layer in the Samsung decision to route NVIDIA's HBM4E base dies through TSMC 3nm rather than its own fab (Samsung Taps TSMC 3nm for Nvidia NVHBM Base Die, technews). All three HBM vendors (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron) converging on TSMC 3nm base dies is not a 'demand uncertain' signal — Nvidia only gets to force single-foundry convergence when the demand book is firm enough to justify the concentration risk.

How to Price the Contradiction

Either credit re-rates, or the backlog re-rates. Both can't hold.

The credit side has the advantage of 'leading'. In the 2000 cycle, hyperscaler credit spreads widened before the Nasdaq peak. CoreWeave pricing a 2031 default is reflecting the sustainability of hyperscaler capex — specifically how 5%-handle rates compress lease and bond-financed structures.

But the backlog side is 'measured'. Guang Jie's H2 2027 lead time, Taiwan Glass's Low DK tightness, and Lite-On's 39-quarter high are numbers that have cleared two gates: order received and shipment logged. The signal-to-noise ratio of one financing-structure (CoreWeave) is simply lower than the aggregate order book across Nvidia, AMD and the full hyperscaler set.

PM takeaway. (1) Memory just reset in valuation after nine straight sessions of foreign selling, so — as SinoPac flagged — this is the long-contract rotation window, not the peak (SinoPac Research: Memory Valuation Reset, technews). The DDR5 16Gb spot at $60.7 is an inventory-exhaustion marker, not a demand-peak marker. (2) The PCB / fiberglass / resistor / optics / cooling chain shares one data point: 2027 pre-booked. (3) In a credit re-rating scenario (recession + rates stuck), what breaks first is single-hyperscaler exposure, not the distributed Taiwan backlog. Even if CoreWeave defaults, Nvidia's three-way HBM order book transfers to the next pool of capital.

The pivot to watch is 10/22. Taiwan Micron's 11,000-strong union enters its second mediation (Micron Taiwan Strike Risk Escalates, cnyes). If that breaks, DDR5 supply tightness repricing follows — and that repricing is the clearest 'backlog side was right' tell the week could produce.
