The Terafab Threshold: The Week TSMC Declared 'No Profit Ceiling' and 2027 Was Pre-Sold

Record Q3 + 40% 2027 guide + Vera Rubin inventory doubled — yet foreigners sold TSMC for seven straight sessions

1. 'No Ceiling' — A New Word Enters the Call

TSMC's Q3 2026 earnings call on October 15 was historic by the numbers alone. USD revenue of $46.7B (+16.2% QoQ), net income of NT$763.1B (+69% YoY), EPS of NT$29.43 — a sixth consecutive quarterly record, beating the top of guidance on every metric. But the call's defining message wasn't the numbers. It was the vocabulary.

CEO CC Wei made three formal declarations. First, 'profit growth has no ceiling.' Second, 'Terafab' negotiations are underway — a neologism denoting roughly 10× the scale of a gigafab, used in an earnings call for the first time. Third, the A14 node is bigger than 2nm — a generation not yet in production is already drawing a larger demand fitting than 2nm itself.

Guidance was reset accordingly. 2026 USD revenue growth was lifted to +44%, Q4 is guided at $52.3–54.3B (+14% QoQ, +58% YoY), and 2027 is guided at +40% growth. Wei added that his desk receives 10+ capacity calls daily. In mid-October, with the 2026 calendar unfinished, buyers are already competing for 2027 slots. 2027 is being pre-sold.

2. N+2 Compression: Vera Rubin Is Raising Prices Before Blackwell Peaks

The more interesting data this week came from one tier below. Hosiden — a component supplier for Nvidia's Vera Rubin, the generation after Blackwell — doubled inventory preparation volumes and raised prices (UDN, Oct 15). Normally the N+2 generation only draws supply-chain response after N has fully ramped. Instead, in mid-October 2026, Vera Rubin components are already in double-inventory and seeing price increases while Blackwell is still ramping. The gap between generations has collapsed.

The N+2 compression shows up elsewhere. A major Taiwanese EMS unveiled fully liquid-cooled servers for Vera Rubin (Yahoo Stock, Oct 15). Yijia (8046) guided AI optical comms revenue from ~6% of sales in 2026 to ~40% in 2027 on 800G/1.6T transceivers (cnyes, Oct 15). Nomura raised its combined 2027 capex forecast for four CSPs to $1 trillion. The sector is simultaneously buying 2027.

3. The Pre-Sold-2027 Paradox — Foreigners Sold TSMC Seven Sessions Straight

The capital-markets response is where the paradox lives. TSMC ADR closed down ~2% on the call day; TAIEX, after a CPI-driven -3.4% plunge, only recovered ~400 points. Most strikingly, foreign investors dumped NT$302.5B (~$9.6B) of TSMC shares, extending a seven-session net-selling streak (technews, Oct 14–15). Two forces overlapped — the 'too good to buy' sell-the-news behavior, and Gartner's warning that AI infrastructure capex will reach $7T through 2030 while attributable revenue covers less than half (technews, Oct 15).

Wiwynn (6669) locked limit-down on the day it reported a record NT$172.6B September revenue (+100% YoY). Even Q3 revenue of NT$434.6B couldn't hold the price. The earnings-vs-price decoupling isn't limited to TSMC — Taiwan's entire AI supply chain is being retested at a valuation that already discounts 2027.

4. The $4B Texas Industrial Park — Geographically Repositioning the Pre-Sold Year

In the same week, Taiwan's Economics Minister announced plans for at least two US industrial parks, with the Texas site alone drawing $4B of investment (cnyes, Oct 16). This is a pre-emptive move to geographically pin the SMB tier of Taiwan's supply chain — the 2nd–3rd tier that will produce 2027 Vera Rubin components — to Nvidia's US AI belt. If Terafab negotiations extend to the US, this is the preparatory geography.

The same day Lite-On closed its NT$36B (~$1.1B) sustainability-linked syndicated loan, its first in 10 years, and demonstrated an 800 VDC power rack as a Nvidia MGX ecosystem partner at OCP. Power architecture is being transitioned for 2027 datacenters — another pre-sold signal.

5. PM Read — 'Too Good' Numbers Are Not a Positioning Signal

The week collapses into three layers. Layer 1: TSMC changed the vocabulary itself (Terafab, no ceiling, A14 > 2nm). Layer 2: The supply chain is inventorying the N+2 generation now (Hosiden +100%, Yijia 6→40%, CSP capex $1T). Layer 3: Capital still left for seven sessions.

What this means: 2027 numbers are pre-sold, but valuations haven't yet handed off to a new positioning base. As long as the Gartner $7T capex-vs-revenue gap acts as a cap, multiples won't expand even as numbers climb. The positioning case isn't TSMC itself — it's the 2nd–3rd tier aligned ahead of time to the next generation (A14, Vera Rubin, 800G optical). TSMC's own multiple stays compressed until the capex/revenue gap narrows.

DDR5 16Gb spot held at $60.6 on October 16. Memory is not rising in lockstep with logic's overheating cycle, which reconfirms this cycle's asymmetry: AI-logic-heavy, memory-selective. The pre-sold 2027 narrative concentrates in logic and its direct ancillaries, not in commodity DRAM.
