The Prepayment Signal: The Week Nvidia Paid Taiwan's Backend Up Front — Three Days Before TSMC's Call
KYEC prepayment, Sigurd's NT$2.19B factory bid, ASE +28% QoQ — the 2027 backend is being locked now
The Hidden Capital Flow: Not the Front, the Back
For the last three days, the surface narrative in Taiwan semi was the TSMC (2330) Oct 15 earnings call countdown. Foreign brokers set targets ranging from NT$3,300 to NT$4,410, and 2027 EPS consensus has moved to NT$150 (TSMC Earnings Call Preview). On Oct 13 foreign investors net-sold NT$165.3B (≈US$5.2B) — the 3rd-largest single-day outflow on record (NT$165B Foreign Net-Sell) — and the TAIEX fell roughly 1,000 points to break below 49,000. The noise clustered around frontend valuation.
But the cash transactions that quietly closed in the same window tell a different story. The capital isn't rotating into frontend logic capacity — it is prepaying backend capacity (test, advanced packaging, power delivery, chassis, cooling). And every one of those prepayment receipts points to the same thing: 2027 supply is being locked right now.
Three Receipts
Receipt 1 — KYEC (2449): Nvidia prepaid test lines. Taiwan tester KYEC disclosed a customer prepayment agreement with Nvidia International, under which Nvidia pays upfront to secure US-sited AI chip testing capacity (Nvidia Prepays KYEC). Not a supply contract. Not a pre-order. A prepayment. Prepayments only happen when the supplier has pricing leverage over the buyer. The fact that this leverage emerged in backend test capacity — not in frontend wafers — is the whole point.
Receipt 2 — Sigurd (6257): NT$2.19B bid for a Hsinchu Science Park factory. Sigurd's subsidiary Sigurd United Testing won a competitive bid for a 14,215-ping plant at 1 Chuangxin 2nd Rd in Hsinchu on Oct 13 (Sigurd NT$2.19B Bid). Securing dedicated test space inside Hsinchu Science Park at this price point is unusual. It is a declaration that geographic concentration of ASIC/AI test capacity is now worth paying for.
Receipt 3 — ASE (3711): +28% QoQ beat and PowerSiP™ 3D SiP commercialization. ASE delivered Q3 revenue +28% QoQ, beating company guidance (+20%) and BofA estimates (+13%), with BofA lifting its target to NT$900 (ASE Q3 2026 Beat). The same week, ASE added a 3D SiP solution to its PowerSiP™ platform that cuts AI power-delivery losses by more than 50% (ASE PowerSiP 3D SiP). Why does power delivery matter? From Vera Rubin onward, rack power crosses 100kW, and logic-die performance is bottlenecked by how close the voltage regulators can sit inside the package. ASE closed that distance by stacking vertically.
OCP 2026: The Week Vera Rubin Became Every Taiwan ODM's Common Platform
As the prepayments and bids were landing, every Taiwan ODM showed up at OCP Global Summit 2026 in San Jose with the same platform. Foxconn (2317) showcased a vertically integrated Vera Rubin rack stack with liquid cooling via Ingrasys and FIT (Foxconn Vera Rubin OCP). Gigabyte (2376) displayed a full rack-scale portfolio including the NVL72 — already in mass production (Gigabyte Vera Rubin NVL72). ASUS (2357) unveiled the XA P2N-E2 built on the Vera CPU (ASUS XA P2N-E2). In Win (6117) posted its highest server-chassis quarter since Q4 2008, an 18-year high (In Win 18-Year High).
Pengyuan posted Q3 revenue of NT$4.58B, +124% YoY, driven by semicon/memory capex pull (Pengyuan +124% YoY). HIWIN (2049) reported September revenue at a 50-month high with order backlog stretching into Q2 2027 (HIWIN 50-Month High). The pattern is unambiguous: before TSMC steps to the mic on Oct 15 to lift 2027 capex to $80–90B, every backend, power, cooling, chassis and tool node that capex will pass through has already been pre-contracted for 2027.
Why Foreigners Sell While Nvidia Prepays
The NT$165B foreign net-sell and the Nvidia prepayment are not contradictions. Foreigners are rebalancing listed equity exposure to AI (2330). Nvidia is locking physical capacity (KYEC test lines). The equity market is asking whether NT$150 of 2027 EPS is priced in; the physical market is asking whether there will be room to test the dies in 2027. Those two questions can have different answers. This week's cash transactions tell us the answer to the second is: lock it now.
Positioning Implications
- ASE (3711) — PowerSiP 3D SiP commercialization is the first-order Vera Rubin power-architecture play. The +28% QoQ print is less a surprise than the first quarterly reflection of a 2027 that has already been pre-contracted.
- Foxconn (2317) — The OCP vertical-integration showcase re-anchors its Vera Rubin rack-supplier status despite the Section 337 headwind (USITC 337 Probe).
- DDR5 16Gb spot at $60.1 (Oct 14) is consistent with the Barclays-cited Micron view that memory remains undersupplied through 2028 (DDR4 Jumps 24% in 3 Months). But the sharpest prepayment signals are not in memory — they are in test, 3D packaging and power SiP.
Risk: If TSMC on Oct 15 guides 2027 capex conservatively — say toward $70B — the backend pre-contract chain unwinds the premium it has already priced. If guidance clears $80B, the prepayment chain is confirmed as the leading indicator it appears to be.
