The Materials Ceiling — Taiwan's Index Bled NT$227B While the Consumables Layer Rewrote Records at Triple-Digit Growth

Behind TSMC's NT$500B, 2nm and CoWoS headlines, filters, quartz cloth, substrates and MLCCs redrew the AI bottleneck in 72 hours

Lead: The index bled; the materials line rewrote records

On September 15 Taiwan's TAIEX shed 351 points (0.77%) to 45,511, breaking the 46,000 handle. Over four sessions foreigners net-sold NT$227B (~US$7.1B), and Monday's turnover collapsed to NT$603.4B — the second-lowest print of 2026. The next day the index bounced 243 points to 45,750, but the real repricing this week was not about the index. It was about where the AI supply-chain bottleneck moved.

The headline slots went to TSMC's NT$500B+ August revenue (+53.3% YoY) and MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro entering mass production on TSMC's 2nm node. But underneath, something quieter happened: Taiwan's "invisible" materials-and-consumables layer printed triple-digit-growth records — and those numbers exposed where the next AI-ramp bottleneck already sits.

The data: August scoreboard, materials layer

  • De Hong (5475-TW) — Taiwan's only quartz-fiber fabric (Q-cloth) producer. August revenue NT$255M, +272% YoY, +11% MoM. Jan–Aug cumulative an all-time high. Driver: AI-server material upgrade cycle.
  • Yesiang — 40-year-old semiconductor chemical-filter specialist. 100%+ YoY monthly growth for May, June, July; H1 revenue +53.2%.
  • Yu Xiang (7909-TW) — >80% share in advanced-node AMC (airborne molecular contamination) filters. Guided at its Sept 15 analyst day for H2 revenue and profit "materially higher" than H1, driven by a leading foundry's 2nm fab build-out.
  • Kinsus (3189-TW) — August revenue NT$4.81B (+40.6% YoY), fifth consecutive monthly record, targeting NT$100B for the year. Caveat: T-Glass shortage caps 10–15% of shipments.
  • IET-KY (4971-TW) — AI optical demand surging, but InP substrate crunch caps upside even as management targets 55–60% InP revenue mix in 2026.
  • Herstein (3026-TW) — Committed NT$812M to Japan's ALPHADESIGN for high-end AI-power MLCC capacity ahead of NVIDIA Vera Rubin ramp.
  • King Slide (2059-TW) — August revenue NT$6.5B (+344% YoY), sixth straight monthly record, Texas plant live.
  • Zhengling (8147-TW) — August revenue NT$230M (+96% YoY), OSFP 800G/1.6T connectors and server-rack harnesses pushing AI data-center mix to ~30%.
  • Win Semiconductors (3105-TW)56 consecutive monthly revenue records, July NT$1.89B, August NT$1.94B. UBS reiterated Buy, NT$500 target.

This is not one hot stock. Quartz → chemical filters → substrates → substrate glass (T-Glass) → InP wafers → MLCCs → connectors → slide rails → GaAs foundry — every layer printed at once.

Interpretation: The bottleneck dropped from wafers/CoWoS down to the layer beneath

Last week's market narrative was TSMC raising the 2027 CoWoS monthly-capacity target from ~160k to ~180k wafers. What this three-day dataset says is the follow-on: once the wafer/packaging ceiling was repriced up, the materials-and-consumables layer immediately became the binding constraint — and that constraint is now blowing up single-name earnings.

Three pieces of evidence.

First, Kinsus's T-Glass comment is decisive. Five straight monthly records, yet 10–15% of shipments are being trimmed by glass-fiber raw-material shortage. That is a server-substrate line already hitting its ceiling at the raw-material level.

Second, IET-KY's InP substrate crunch. AI optical demand is spilling over, but compound-semiconductor substrate supply cannot keep pace. This is exactly why Win Semi has printed 56 consecutive monthly records in GaAs/InP foundry — the same shortage, seen from the other side.

Third, China's yttrium card. The September 15 report describes China effectively halting yttrium exports to the US — a rare-earth critical for semiconductor process, aerospace thermal coatings, and lasers. Behind Taiwan's materials-line records, the rare-earth layer has hardened into geopolitical leverage ahead of the Xi–Trump summit.

Why the index bled anyway

Foreigners dumped NT$227B in four sessions on a mix of AI-peak fears (Anthropic and OpenAI slowdown comments, Philadelphia Semi Index –5.9%) and pre-Fed position squaring. But at the single-name level, TSMC filled its NT$7 ex-dividend gap in under 30 minutes, MediaTek and Foxconn logged record August revenue, and Auras (3017) posted a Q2 gross margin of 32.57% — far above the 25.2% consensus set just 18 months ago. The most important signal of the week is that index risk-off and materials-line records coexisted inside the same three days.

Positioning: Three takeaways

  1. Materials-and-consumables is the new CoWoS logic. Just as capacity upgrades re-rate names, the inventory-and-consumables cycle in T-Glass, quartz, InP, and AMC filters could act as a 6–12-month re-rating trigger. Names sitting at the bottom of the stack — Nan Ya PCB (8046), Kinsus (3189), GlobalWafers (6488) — should decouple from the index.
  2. The real 2nm beneficiary is not wafer capacity. MediaTek's D9600 Pro opened 2nm mass production and Yu Xiang (7909) immediately guided for a record H2 gross margin. When a single 2nm fab consumes an outsized share of chemical filters, specialty gases, and quartz consumables, materials suppliers hold an option not on revenue per wafer but on fab count itself.
  3. DDR5 spot at US$54.5 (2026-09-16) still underwrites the top-down. Memory headlines are noisy, but spot is coherent with the materials-line expansion logic.

What to watch

  • Q4 T-Glass inventory cycle — when Kinsus's cap releases.
  • InP wafer expansion — whether IET-KY and Win Semi break through the current ceiling.
  • Yttrium / rare-earth export announcements — whether the Xi–Trump summit hardens or eases the geopolitical premium priced into Taiwan's materials line.
  • Micron Taiwan union negotiation — a granted 15% operating-profit share would compress memory cost structure.
