The 2027 Bookline — The Week Taiwan's Three AI ODMs Set August Records and Wrote Capex Into Next Year

Wistron NT$460B, Quanta NT$424B, Wiwynn NT$144B — three simultaneous August records, and Wiwynn already guided 2027 capex above 2026

August 2026 Revenue YoY — Taiwan ODM Tier vs. Memory TierForward Capex Commitments Disclosed This Week (US$M)

Three Augusts, One Direction

In August 2026, Taiwan's three big AI-server ODMs printed simultaneous all-time monthly revenue records — and, more importantly, wrote the same message about 2027 in three different corporate dialects. Wistron (3231) posted NT$460.1B (~US$14.1B), up 167% YoY, with Jan–Aug cumulative at NT$2.51T. Quanta (2382) came in at NT$423.97B, up 177.5% YoY, with AI servers now 84% of revenue and management guiding order visibility through 2028. Wiwynn (6669) hit NT$144.3B (+50% YoY), Jan–Aug at NT$816.7B — and delivered the line that mattered most: H2 capex of US$942M, with 2027 capex expected to rise from there.

Synchronous ODM records are not new to the AI cycle. What made this week different was that the signal shifted from earnings to capital schedules. Wistron's board approved a fresh US$209M capex line for US/Vietnam server capacity. Wiwynn locked H2 2026 capex at US$942M and explicitly stepped 2027 higher. Quanta opened its orderbook window to 2028. Three companies, three languages, one sentence: next year is bigger than this year.

What a Bookline Means

Capex bookings are heavier than order bookings. Orders can be cancelled; steel plate can't be un-fabricated. Wiwynn raising 2027 capex is a fingerprint signal from the hyperscaler side (Meta, Microsoft) that the transition from Blackwell GB300 racks to Vera Rubin isn't going to produce the 3-4-month order gap the sell side had been modeling. Wiwynn just signed against that gap not existing.

The corroboration below the ODM tier is thick. Powertech (6239) has pushed FOPLP (fan-out panel-level packaging) yields to 90–95% and has already locked AMD and Broadcom volumes for the 2027 ramp; August revenue was NT$8.56B (+24.5% YoY), a second consecutive monthly high. ASE (3711) set an all-time monthly record at NT$82.2B (+45.7% YoY) — its advanced packaging line simply cannot keep up with the intake. GPTC, the advanced packaging equipment maker, posted +43.4% YoY August revenue. Back-end capacity is the real bottleneck, and the bottleneck is already contracted forward into 2027.

TSMC's Silence, the ODMs' Voice

In the same week, TSMC sent the opposite kind of signal. Gross, operating, and net margins all hit simultaneous all-time highs — and the stock refused to move. Analyst Shen Yi-chen bluntly asked whether triple record margins could still hold the valuation. The market has already priced TSMC's perfection. What moves now is the bookline one tier below.

That's the phase transition worth naming. Through H1 2026, the momentum story belonged to TSMC, SK Hynix, and HBM. This week in the Taiwan corner, both the revenue mass (Wistron's single month exceeded TSMC's) and the forward visibility (Quanta to 2028, Wiwynn's 2027 capex step-up) migrated to the ODM tier. Margins still belong overwhelmingly to TSMC, but share-price reactivity has moved down the stack. Wistron gave back most of its move ahead of the print; Quanta re-accelerated after the 2028 comment landed.

Contrast: The Memory Cooling Signal

Same week, Kioxia's CEO Hiroo Ota told his sales team, on the record, that NAND prices have "risen enough" and to stop asking for more increases. That's an unusual voluntary brake after a 70% QoQ Q3 hike. Layer in Apple reportedly passing DRAM/NAND inflation through as a ~10% iPhone 18 price rise (cnyes), and the memory rally is signaling late cycle. Taiwan's memory-tier prints were flashy — Phison +377% YoY, Winbond +289%, memory distributor +177% Jan–Aug — but each of them saw sharp intraday selling on the same day the number crossed the tape. The market is voting "near the top."

That contrast is why the ODM bookline reads safer. ODM margins are largely decoupled from memory spot prices (BOM pass-through), and material inflation feeds project quotes. DDR5 16Gb spot at $54.5 on 2026-09-10 is not a P&L event for a Wiwynn or a Quanta. It is a P&L event for a Phison. That's why the pure memory names got sold this week while the ODM tier held.

The Read

The signal Taiwan sent in the last three days is small in words and large in consequence. The AI-server capex cycle does not contract in 2027. The three ODMs closed this year with record months and pre-booked next year with capital schedules and orderbook windows. TSMC's profitability, still the best in the industry, has become the tail light of the story rather than the headlight. The next page the market will price is the one that answers: who owns the 2028 volumes? Wiwynn, Quanta, and Wistron wrote that answer out loud this week — and Wiwynn, uniquely, backed it up with a capex step-up.

For a Silicon Nexus portfolio lens: Wiwynn (6669) is the purest read on the 2027 bookline because its capex sentence is the most explicit; Quanta (2382) is the widest surface but with the highest sensitivity to hyperscaler mix shifts; Wistron (3231) is the mass leader but its capex is geographic (US/Vietnam), which is a supply-resilience signal rather than a demand signal. The tier below — Powertech, ASE, GPTC — is where the 2027 bookline compounds through back-end capacity.
