The ESUN Line — The Week Realtek Broke Into 3nm ASIC and Joined the Scale-Up Ethernet Alliance

Taiwan's second-tier fabless climbs from analog silicon into AI backbone networking, while foreign flows print the fourth-largest single-day buy on record

Taiwan AI-Silicon Names — August 2026 Revenue YoYLatest Reported Gross Margin — Taiwan Fabless / OSAT

For most of this cycle, the Taiwan AI trade has been binary — TSMC prints the wafer, memory prints the module, everything else is a satellite. This week the satellites moved, and the mover with the most narrative weight was Realtek (2379).

On September 7, Realtek chairman Qiu Shunjian confirmed something the company had never publicly acknowledged: 3nm ASIC orders in hand, and membership in ESUN — the Ethernet for Scale-Up Networking alliance being built as the multi-vendor answer to NVIDIA's NVLink inside AI cabinets. Realtek's August revenue printed NT$12.46B (+28% YoY), still growing off a base most analysts had written down to consumer PC and Wi-Fi silicon. The 3nm ASIC confirmation and the ESUN seat rewrite that base.

ESUN matters more than the headline suggests. It is the multi-vendor scale-up Ethernet coalition — Broadcom-anchored, with AMD, Cisco, Meta, and now a handful of Taiwan fabless names — that hyperscalers want as insurance against NVLink lock-in inside future cabinets. Membership is a customer list. Any hyperscaler shipping a non-NVIDIA scale-up fabric in 2027–2028 becomes a design-in target for Realtek's PHY, switch, and now custom ASIC silicon. The "undisclosed NVIDIA deals" the chairman also flagged, separately and pointedly, matter less than the ESUN commitment. NVIDIA orders come and go; alliance membership is a multi-year cycle in AI networking silicon, and once you're inside the multi-vendor stack, you print through the entire cabinet upgrade cycle.

The Realtek pivot doesn't sit alone. Global Unichip (3443), the ASIC design house TSMC anchors as its front-of-line customer proxy, printed August revenue of NT$5.84B (+111% YoY). Two Taiwan ASIC houses growing triple-digit YoY into September — one anchored to TSMC's advanced-node capacity, one climbing out of consumer analog — is the shape of a market that has structurally repriced ASIC silicon. Not fabless design services. ASIC silicon. That is a different unit economic, one that compounds when the design cycle repeats on TSMC's 2nm ramp in 2027.

Novatek (3034), the display-driver franchise most investors treated as a Q2 mean-reversion story, reported Q2 EPS of NT$10.4 with gross margin of 42.4% — comfortably above its own 38–41% guidance range and roughly 240bps above sell-side consensus. Novatek's UBS TMT Summit slot is September 14. If Novatek confirms mix shift is sustainable — high-refresh OLED driver, timing controller, edge-inference SoC — the sell side will have to raise numbers. Novatek at 42% gross margin is not the same company it was in 2024, and the market is only halfway through re-basing the multiple.

Underneath the fabless second-tier repricing, the Taiwan flow tape lit up. Foreign institutional investors net-purchased NT$88.3B on September 5 — the fourth-largest single-day foreign buy in Taiwan's history — and the TAIEX added 775 points on September 7 to close at 47,326, within 900 points of the all-time high. UBS raised Taiwan's 2026 GDP forecast to 11% versus street consensus in the mid-single digits, and to 4.3% for 2027, both skewed to the upside, citing AI-hardware export dominance. When UBS moves 400bps above consensus on a 4% economy, that is not a model tweak — it is a re-rating call. TSMC executives were separately disclosed as ADR buyers ahead of the October earnings print, and a foreign broker set a $547 ADR target — a number that pencils TSMC toward the $3 trillion market cap that Taipei has been circling for the better part of a year.

Why this week, and why the second tier

The first-tier story is done being surprising. Memory module makers ADATA and Team Group are on sixth consecutive record months. Macronix printed its first-ever NT$8B month at +219% YoY. Winbond posted 70.3% memory gross margin at 100% utilization. TSMC is a $547 ADR consensus. What was still up for debate was whether the AI silicon budget would reach down into second-tier Taiwan fabless — the Realteks and Novateks that had spent five years as consumer-cycle proxies. This week's data closes that debate. Realtek is now a 3nm ASIC customer of TSMC and an ESUN alliance member. Novatek's margin structure has re-based 400bps higher. Global Unichip is running at doubled YoY revenue. The AI silicon budget is spreading down the fabless stack, not just up the memory stack.

What we are watching next

Three catalysts. First, Novatek's September 14 UBS TMT Summit slot — either the margin structure holds and analysts raise, or it reverts and the mean-reversion trade returns. Second, TSMC's OIP forum on September 23, where advanced-packaging and 3nm/2nm ecosystem customers — including Realtek's ASIC team — typically deliver design-win detail. Third, TSMC's October earnings call: the ADR insider buying is unusual enough that the sell side will be watching for guidance on 2027 CoWoS capacity absorbed by ESUN-aligned customers versus NVIDIA-aligned customers. If TSMC signals that a meaningful share of 2027 CoWoS slots is already booked by non-NVIDIA hyperscaler ASIC programs, Realtek's 3nm confirmation becomes the first visible datapoint in a larger thesis: Taiwan's second-tier fabless is the pipe layer of AI's next cabinet cycle.

The DDR5 16Gb spot ticked to $54.33 on September 8 — still holding the plateau that made Winbond's 70.3% memory gross margin possible. Memory is not the surprise anymore. The surprise is which second-tier Taiwan names the AI-networking budget is quietly funding to build the pipes.
