The Buyer Roster Widened in Three Directions — SK Hynix's Japan JV Search, AMAT's 24-Month Book, and Four Conglomerates Signing NVIDIA's Physical AI

Tokyo sold Advantest on Fed fear while its order-book ceiling thickened on three separate clocks

Tokyo's Sell Clock Was Two Weeks Long

In the last week of August, Tokyo's reason for selling Advantest (6857) was simple: fear of an earlier US rate hike. On August 31, the Nikkei 225 dropped sharply in a correction led by semiconductor equipment names, with Advantest and Tokyo Electron weighing on the index most. The sell clock ran two weeks — the time to the next FOMC.

But during those same 72 hours, three separate pieces of news thickened the ceiling of Advantest's order book on three different clocks. The stock the market sold on one clock had its buyer roster expand on three.

Signal 1 — SK Hynix's Japan JV, Nationwide Site Search (5-Year Clock)

On August 31, Bloomberg reported that SK Hynix is evaluating construction of a semiconductor JV facility inside Japan, with candidate sites "spanning the entire country." This is a materially bigger story than the previously reported Miyagi single-fab pick. Hynix isn't just choosing a site; it is negotiating the JV structure itself — a signal that Korea's memory leader is reclassifying Japan from an R&D partner into a production home.

New memory capacity always drags new backend test capacity with it. And any HBM/NAND line built on Japanese soil sits — by geography and SLA — first in line for Advantest testers.

Signal 2 — AMAT Certifies a 24-Month Book (2-Year Clock)

Applied Materials' earnings, covered by Toyo Keizai on August 29, disclosed that AI-chip customers are committing to equipment orders 2+ years forward. When front-end (deposition, etch) is locked in 24 months out, backend test capacity is booked to the same horizon. That is why Advantest's August prints could plausibly draw a path to ¥1 trillion in annual operating profit — the scenario explicitly named by Yahoo News and Minkabu Magazine on August 30.

A 24-month order book does not synchronize to a 2-week Fed clock.

Signal 3 — Hitachi, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Corp, and Mitsui Sign NVIDIA's Physical AI (3–5 Year Clock)

On August 30, ITMedia reported that Hitachi, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Mitsui & Co. had joined NVIDIA's Physical AI / Cosmos Coalition. This is unlike any of the covered Japan-chip narratives so far: for the first time, Japan's zaibatsu-descended sogo shosha and industrial giants are named as orchestrators inside the AI-chip supply chain.

Their purpose is clear — smart factories, autonomous mobility, robotics, industrial edge inference. Edge inference silicon runs a different test sequence than high-end HBM accelerators. This locks perfectly into last month's news that Advantest burned through its FY2026 5,000-unit AI-inference tester target early. The buyer roster widened from ~3-4 hyperscalers to four new Japanese industrials — for a different, larger unit-volume mix.

Signal 4 (Backdrop) — ¥5T from Kioxia+SanDisk, DNP's All-Time High

Asahi and MONOist coverage of the Kioxia/SanDisk ¥5 trillion NAND capacity expansion (#22, #27), together with DNP hitting an all-time high in photomask (#23), form the peripheral confirmation of the three signals above. On Japanese soil alone, more than ¥10 trillion of new memory, mask, and materials capacity may be built out over the next three years — and every wafer of it eventually ships through a tester.

Risk — The Tariff Line, But Targeted at Consumer IT

Also in the same week, Zaikei Shimbun (August 28) reported that Washington is weighing an expansion of semiconductor tariffs to include notebooks, gaming consoles, and AI servers. That threatens US end-demand for some of what Advantest tests. But the tariff scope skews toward consumer and enterprise IT, not hyperscaler AI infrastructure itself — so HBM and AI-accelerator test volumes are not directly hit. The ceiling of the ¥1T scenario is relatively insulated.

Implication — Sell Clock and Revenue Clock Are Desynchronized

Tokyo sold Advantest on a 2-week macro clock. But during those same 72 hours, the news thickening its buyer roster ran on different clocks:

  • 2 years (AMAT order book)
  • 3–5 years (Physical AI Coalition rollout)
  • 5+ years (SK Hynix JV new capacity)

A 25 bp Fed decision does not unwind any of those three. Corrections where the sell clock and the revenue clock synchronize are rare in the semi cycle. This one is unlikely to be that case.
