Between the Izakaya and the Order Book

Tokyo, the evening of August 24. Diamond Online reported that Jensen Huang had convened the top 30 executives of Japan's semiconductor complex for a Tokyo izakaya session, pouring sake and building relationships across nearly the entire value chain — Sony Semiconductor, Tokyo Electron, Advantest, Shin-Etsu, Kyocera. Relationship-building, supply reconfirmation, roadmap alignment. On the surface no signal could have been better.

The next morning the Nikkei 225 quietly sold every one of them. Advantest gapped down. The semiconductor sector was pinned. Shikiho Online noted that the index slipped shortly after the open on August 25 as chip stocks came under selling pressure. The reason was singular — NVIDIA's August 26 earnings release. The Tokyo local event mattered less than one hour in Santa Clara.

¥43,000 on Paper

Within the same 24-hour window two analyst calls landed. First, a major US securities firm raised Advantest's target price to ¥43,000, keeping a Neutral rating. Second, Morgan Stanley MUFG reaffirmed Advantest and Tokyo Electron as top picks in the SPE sector. Both calls rested on the same premise: NVIDIA's confirmed +15% AI server price hike from early 2027, driven explicitly by HBM/memory supply tightness.

The logic is clean. Server ASP hike → sustained HBM demand → longer HBM test time → Advantest's memory tester order book extends. The 15% figure was carried by both innovaTopia and BigGo the same week, and the August 25 spot DDR5 16Gb print of $54.167 corroborated the direction. Yet the ¥43,000 on paper did not clear the tape. Advantest kept sliding alongside US tech weakness (Yahoo Finance). ¥43,000 lived only inside the research note.

Jensen's Two Hands

NVIDIA is currently doing two things that push the Japanese chip complex in opposite directions. One hand pours sake at the izakaya to lock in 30 suppliers. The other hand raises server prices 15% to defend its own gross margin. And the raw materials of that margin — HBM, silicon wafers, tester hours, specialty gases — are precisely the revenue of those 30 companies.

Nippon Sanso HD is the quiet evidence. Yahoo News reported that the industrial gas supplier is posting a strong Q1 driven by semiconductor sales momentum. The silicon-materials-for-etching-equipment market is worth $532M in 2026 growing at 6.3% (Newscast). Not consumer discretionary — fab consumables — is what continues to sell through.

The Front End Rises While the Back End Bleeds

The contrast is brutal. Socionext (6526) grew revenue but swung to a Q1 net loss (LIMO), a diagnosis of margin compression in fabless SoC/logic. Shin-Etsu Chemical fell sharply enough that a broker report openly asked whether it's a buying opportunity (tsubame104). The finished-product layer — fabless SoC vendors without foundry captivity, cyclically-exposed chemical majors — is being revalued down. Meanwhile the front-end names Jensen actually locked at the izakaya — testers (Advantest), equipment (Tokyo Electron), gases (Nippon Sanso), optical comms (Kyocera) — get raised only inside analyst notes.

Kyocera detailed AI-datacenter/semiconductor support tech and confirmed a strategic pivot toward next-generation optical communications this week — exactly the kind of company that belonged at that izakaya table.

RISC-V at the Door

Meanwhile Toyo Keizai flagged that RISC-V is emerging as a threat to Arm inside Japan's sovereign AI push. The value chain Jensen is trying to defend sits on top of an x86/CUDA/Arm stack. If Japan starts adopting royalty-free RISC-V under the sovereign-AI banner, the political price tag of izakaya diplomacy goes up. The sake was warm; the architecture underneath is contested.

PM Read: Advantest as a Single Derivative

The positioning conclusion is simple. Advantest (6857) is the nodal point of this week's Japan semi narrative. MS MUFG's top-pick reaffirmation, the ¥43,000 target price, its HBM-tester exposure to NVIDIA, and Jensen's izakaya invitation — four vectors converge on one ticker. Until NVIDIA prints on August 26, however, Advantest trades as a derivative of Santa Clara.

Two things are worth remembering. First, MS MUFG picked Advantest and Tokyo Electron (8035) together. HBM test and etch/deposition equipment have independent demand curves — both being raised simultaneously implies the cycle is actually running, not one silo. Second, the 15% server ASP hike is a 2027-early event. The order book for that hike is being negotiated now. The izakaya was the pre-game to that order-book meeting.

Until Jensen's earnings call clears on August 26, treat Advantest as the spread between order book (¥43,000) and tape (being pre-sold). That spread is the whole Japan semi story this week. When the tape and the order book eventually reconverge, the front-end names Jensen locked at the izakaya — 6857, 8035, 4063 (Shin-Etsu), 4183 (Mitsui Chem — not in universe), and the gas/materials layer — get repriced first. Socionext-style back-end names carry the sensitivity to how much of that 15% ASP hike NVIDIA actually needs to keep for itself.
