The Optical-Layer Earnings Day — When UMC's 374% Profit Surge Re-Rated Taiwan's Silicon Photonics Stack in One Session
UMC's 12-inch silicon photonics ramp, HungJin's CPO tester ship date, and Accton's 800G/1.6T limit-up all landed in the same session.
The Session Optical Went from Story to Print
For seven days, Taiwan's tape has run on four axes — TSMC limit-up, MediaTek ASIC, TEL guidance, CXMT rotation. The August 3 session opened a fifth that none of those covered. Silicon photonics and co-packaged optics stopped being a 2027 narrative and started being a Q2 2026 earnings line, and four names in the Taiwan stack confirmed it in the same window.
UMC (2303) sat at the center. Q2 net profit landed at NT$42.3B, EPS NT$3.39, +374% YoY — a print that is unrecognizable against the "legacy foundry" tape the market ran on this name six months ago. Management framed it on two axes: utilization recovery, and first revenue recognition on 12-inch silicon-photonics wafers. The three-year guide crosses $1B in AI-related revenue, roughly 15% of UMC's 2025 top line. In the same week Goldman's closed-door meeting flagged that TSMC's 2027 advanced-node and advanced-packaging pricing could push +10%, UMC quietly built its own premium bucket.
Same session: HungJin Precision (7769) confirmed technical validation of its Insertion 4 OE CPO simultaneous electro-optical test system and set October first shipments, targeting 20–30 units/month at customer ramp. CPO test has been called a bottleneck for twelve months without appearing in anyone's P&L — this dating is the first signal it lands in Q4 numbers.
On the networking layer, Accton Technology (2345) printed a NT$2,125 daily limit-up on July 31 and 12% over two sessions, catalyst being 800G/1.6T switch order strength — the exact end-market UMC's 12-inch silicon photonics wafers point at. On the optical-filter layer, Dongdian Photonics (6588) posted H1 revenue of NT$184M, +132% YoY, already matching full-year 2025. Shares +9.3% last week.
Put the four in one sentence: UMC makes the wafer, HungJin tests the CPO dies coming off it, Dongdian makes the filters, Accton builds the final switch. Every layer of the stack reacted to earnings or shipment confirmation in the same session.
Why Demand Confirmation and Supply Shock Overlapped
Why the first week of August, specifically. Two flows worked in the same direction.
First, AI infrastructure demand made physical. Apple posted record Q3 revenue but Tim Cook warned that AI data-center build-out is consuming advanced memory to the point that a "once-in-a-century" memory flood has reached the iPhone supply chain; the stock fell 7.35% and ceded the market-cap crown back to NVIDIA. DIGITIMES flagged three unpublished downstream effects in the Apple chain from the same episode. When HBM and DDR5 tighten, pressure spills into optics, because bandwidth substitutes for bandwidth. DDR5 16Gb spot printed $51.0 on August 3, still climbing.
Second, an accidental cut to 8-inch physical supply. GlobalWafers (6488) confirmed the July 22 fire at its Novara, Italy plant took ~5% of global 8-inch wafer capacity offline — Fab300 unaffected, but the read-across for mixed 8/12-inch foundries like UMC and Vanguard (5347) is a double effect: legacy pricing gets held up by scarcity while UMC's 12-inch silicon-photonics ramp captures a premium margin bucket at the top.
Third, policy risk that legitimizes a supply premium. Taiwan's Legislative Yuan is reviewing an Energy Management Act amendment that would force 400+ chipmakers and data centers over a set threshold to build on-site power. If enacted, foundry capex baselines shift structurally upward outside of wafer capacity — and operators that already have their own campus infrastructure (UMC's Nanke campus, TSMC's Fab18) get a relative premium.
Positioning
Goldman's 10% TSMC price-hike scenario was the headline. The real story two lines under it is the re-rating of the foundry revenue mix toward silicon photonics. UMC (2303) is not the only pure-play — Vanguard (5347) shares the 8-inch tightness — but this was the session UMC took off its own "legacy" label, and the market takes several quarters to internalize that kind of reclassification.
One caveat. Michael Burry's July 30 filing added NVIDIA December puts and expanded Micron/SOXX shorts. The AI capex fade tail is intact, and the optical layer is ultimately a function of hyperscaler infrastructure budgets. But what this session confirmed is different from that debate: before demand disappears, supply is being pulled forward first.
