The Hike Went Horizontal — The Week TSMC's Letter Crossed Three Node Generations and UMC's 27% Four-Day Rally Synchronized Taiwan's Full Stack on Pricing
Foundry-leading, foundry-mature, OSAT and PC OEM all signed price letters in the same five trading days — the June 24 record NT$177.4B foreign sell turned out to be capitulation hours before Micron beat.
The Hike Letter Got Three Nodes Wider
The most distinctive fact about Taiwan's semiconductor stack this week is not that any single node or company raised prices — it is that the whole supply chain raised prices in the same direction, in the same week. TSMC's 5-10% letter, initially read as a 3nm-only event, was reported by analyst Tim Culpan to span all advanced nodes ≤7nm — roughly three times the original scope. UMC (2303) rallied 27.14% in four sessions to a 26-year high. ASE (3711) COO Tien Wu told the AGM that "price increases are inevitable." And Asus formally confirmed PC ASPs are up 30% in six months with another 5% expected in H2 2026.
Each headline is news in isolation. The synchronization is the real story. Memory cycles in isolation, or leading-edge alone, are familiar. What was new this week is foundry-leading + foundry-mature + OSAT + PC OEM all moving in the same direction, at overlapping magnitudes, inside five trading days.
TSMC's Letter Was 3x Wider Than the Market First Read
On June 24, analyst Tim Culpan reported that TSMC's customer notice applied 5-10% hikes across every advanced node ≤7nm — not just 3nm as the initial read suggested. Aletheia Capital responded by raising TSMC's 2027 capex forecast to $85B (+52-57% YoY) and 2028 to $94B, with 2027/2028 EPS growth pegged at 34% and 44%.
What that does mechanically: it pulls every non-Nvidia AI customer — MediaTek's Dimensity APs, Qualcomm's Dragonfly C1000 data-center CPU, AMD's MI series, Broadcom's TPU work — into the same margin squeeze that previously only hit 3nm Blackwell/Rubin tape-outs. When the letter was 3nm-only, the market could tell itself "Nvidia absorbs it." When the letter spans 7nm-5nm-3nm at uniform magnitude, the whole non-Nvidia fabless cohort gets the same compression at once. This is not just a price hike. It is TSMC abandoning differentiated pricing across its non-Nvidia node bands.
UMC: The Mature-Node Mirror Hit a 26-Year High
UMC (2303) gained 27.14% across four sessions, briefly fighting Yageo (2327) for the #6 slot in Taiwan's market-cap league and printing a 26-year high. Two triggers landed in the same week: (1) Qualcomm named UMC and Nanya among 35 announced suppliers for its Meta data-center partnership unveiled June 25, covering Dragonfly C1000 CPU, HBC and AI300 inference accelerator; (2) HSBC and UBS both upgraded UMC to Buy in the same week, with price targets of NT$235 and NT$230 respectively.
